Bicycle Safety in Florida
Bicycling is an excellent form of low impact cardiovascular exercise for all ages. Some of our fondest memories as both parents and children are the times that one learns to balance and ride a two wheeler. That classic image that was met with several bouts of failure before success for the majority of us. Unfortunately, every year bicyclists are seriously injured or result in fatality in a variety of types of accidents many of which are probably avoidable.
Statistics: In 2015, 818 pedalcyclists were killed and 45,000 were injured in motor vehicle traffic crashes. Pedalcyclist deaths accounted for 2.3 percent of all motor vehicle traffic fatalities, and made up 2 percent of all the people injured in traffic crashes during the year. The number of pedalcyclist injuries in 2015 is 2.3 percent higher than the pedalcyclists injuries reported in 2006.
Through education, outreach, enforcement of existing laws some of these accidents can be reduced or avoided.
Bicycle Helmet Laws: Many jurisdictions enforce bicycle helmet laws for our youth that through obedience and enforcement can dramatically reduce head injuries sustained by our youth involved with bicycle accidents.
