Fort Lauderdale Bicyclist Struck and Killed by Garbage Truck
On the morning of Wednesday, August 13, 2014, a tragedy occurred that resulted in an 18 year old man being struck and killed while he rode his bicycle. The incident happened as the bicyclist was traveling west of the Boynton Beach area of Florida. Police have since identified the young man as Jesus Frias.
Frias was riding his bike around the intersection of Lawrence Road and Kamena Court, which is just north of West Boyton Beach Boulevard. The young man was from the Boynton Beach area and was killed after he was struck by a garbage truck, according to the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s office.
The garbage truck was being operated by 41 year old Morris Rodriguez, a resident of Fort Lauderdale, Florida. The report from the sheriff’s office stated that the garbage truck collided with Frias on his bicycle just prior to 10:00 that morning. The garbage truck was making a turn to the right from Kamena Court westbound onto the northbound Lawrence Road just as Frias had been approaching Kamena Court while traveling south on Lawrence Road.
Frias’ bike made impact with the garbage truck’s passenger’s side and both he and the bicycle turned over, according to the sheriff’s report. Afterward, Frias and his bike were run over by the rear passenger tires of the garbage truck.
The crash report done by the sheriff’s office stated that neither drugs nor alcohol came into play to cause the accident. There are no charges pending against Rodriguez, who was not injured in the collision.
Sadly, bicycle accidents are very common in the state of Florida and can occur as a result of a number of situations on the road. In many instances, a car can suffer nothing more than a minor fender bender, but a collision often has tragic results for a person riding a bike as the vehicle is much smaller and offers far less protection. Some of the most common legal claims following a bicycle accident include traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury, helmet defect claims, bicycles versus motor vehicles and death.
